Mozart’s final and most profound work, his Requiem, is a powerful and moving choral work renowned for dramatic intensity, stirring sequences, rich harmonies and evocative use of choir and orchestra. Exploring themes of mourning, hope, and redemption, the Mozart Requiem is one of the most enduring and celebrated pieces in classical music.

Michael Easton’s compelling Unsung Heroes is based on the poetry of six famous English poets who served in WWI, and is a personal reflection of the composer on the horror of war and its ultimate uselessness.
First written in 1990, this work was specifically dedicated by the Composer to Camberwell Chorale and its Musical Director, Douglas Heywood.

Camberwell Chorale is a non-auditioned community choir which has been delighting audiences with the presentation of quality choral music for over 80 years, the last 50 years in association with the Camerata Orchestra. Our Musical Director for the last 51 years, Douglas Heywood OAM, guides our musical success with the careful preparation of our annual concert programs and performances, which are a delight for all involved.

Camberwell Chorale has a great Concert Series in store for 2026, and our door is always open to all who wish to experience the challenge and thrill of learning and performing quality choral music. All voice parts are welcome.

Rehearsals will be held each Tuesday evening, 7.30 pm at Camberwell Baptist Church, corner of Riversdale Road and Wills Street, Camberwell, commencing Tuesday 27^th January, 2026. Come and join us!

On Sunday 30th November 2025, at 2:30 pm, under the direction of Conductor, Douglas Heywood OAM, the Camberwell Chorale and Camerata Orchestra proudly present an afternoon performance of Handel’s magnificent “Messiah”.

For this, the final performance in our 2025 concert series, we will be joined by distinguished soloists:

Manfred Pohlenz – Bass

An enduring favourite for performers and listeners alike, our presentation of Handel’s “Messiah” will be a wonderful finale for 2025.

Under the direction of conductor, Douglas Heywood OAM, the Camberwell Chorale and Camerata Orchestra proudly present Joseph Haydn’s glorious oratorio ‘The Creation’, considered by many to be his most famous and enduring masterpiece. It’s one of the finest examples of classical oratorio ever composed.

Sadly, due to unforeseen circumstances, our performance of ‘Unsung Heroes’ scheduled to be on Sunday 27 July has been cancelled. We look forward to seeing you at our performance of Haydn’s Creation on Sunday 19 October at the Hawthorn Arts Centre. It will be a wonderful afternoon of music – we’ll provide more details soon!

Michael Easton`s compelling “Unsung Heroes” is based on the poetry of six famous English poets who served in WWI, and is a personal reflection of the composer on the horror of war and its ultimate uselessness. First written in 1990, this Symphony was specifically dedicated by the Composer to Camberwell Chorale and its Musical Director, Douglas Heywood.

This performance is in recognition of the 80th Anniversary of the end of WWII, and will feature soloists Lauren Oldham, (Soprano) and Adam Miller (Baritone).

Rachmaninoff’s glorious “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini” was inspired by a simple tune by the early 19th century violin virtuoso, Niccolo Paganini. Considered one of the finest pianists of his day, and as a composer one of the last great representatives of Romanticism in Russian classical music, Rachmaninoff composed this work in 1934, receiving an overwhelming public response when it premiered the same year.

For this performance, we welcome soloist Chutong Yi, winner of the Piano Concerto Competition at the 2024 Boroondara Eisteddfod.

Direct from four successful concerts in China, Camberwell Chorale will present the fifth and final performance of “Music for the Theatre”, an eclectic and exciting programme with selections from Phantom of the Opera, The Beatles in Revue, well-known choruses and arias from the operas of Verdi and Puccini, and Sir Michael Tippett’s powerful setting of five spirituals from his Oratorio, A Child of our Time.

For the final concert in the 80th anniversary year of the Camberwell Chorale, you’re invited to join the Chorale and the Camerata Orchestra for an afternoon performance of Handel’s much-loved “Messiah” on Sunday 1^st December at 2:30pm in the Hawthorn Arts Centre.

You’ll have the opportunity to sing with the choir, in this “Sing-Along Messiah”. ?If you have a treasured copy of the music, bring it. ?If not, a copy will be provided.

If you don’t wish to sing, you can simply sit back and enjoy the rousing and joyful strains of the “Hallelujah” Chorus resounding through the magnificent hall at the Hawthorn Arts Centre.

Whichever option you choose, it’ll be a wonderful finale for 2024.

The four distinguished soloists are:

Hamish Gould (Counter Tenor)
Paul Biencourt (Tenor)
Michael Lampard (Bass).

The performance will be conducted by Douglas Heywood OAM.
