Castro’s Children
Camberwell Chorale is delighted to provide details of the Premiere Season of a wonderful new Australian musical, “Castro’s Children”, a work based on historical fact for which Simon Stone has written the score!
Simon is a highly valued member of the Chorale community, being our Rehearsal Accompanist and a member of our own Camerata Orchestra, and the staging of “Castro’s Children” will be the culmination of an incredible 14-year journey for both Simon and his collaborator, writer and director, Peter Fitzpatrick.
To be staged at the Gasworks Theatre in July, “Castro’s Children” is set in Cuba and America in the early 1960s and 1980s, and recalls the remarkable story of Operation Pedro Pan, a covert collaboration between the Catholic Church and the CIA, in which 14,048 Cuban children between the ages of 10 and 14 were evacuated to the United States in the early stages of Castro’s regime – without, apparently, anyone noticing that something highly unusual was going on!
